Color
Color can make or break the desired effect when choosing a shade. Some things to think about when choosing a color are:
What is the color palette of the room?
What are the colors in my lamp, and do I want to match them?
How much light do I need from this lamp, and which colors will give that effect?

Fabric
Fabric is a subtle difference that most people don't realize exists. It can create a casual feel, or a more formal environment. Linen shades often compliment the earthy feel of a ceramic lamp with the right amount of texture, just as the slubbing of dupioni silk can add just the right touch to a formal living room.

Size
The size of the lampshade you choose depends upon the size of your lamp. Typically, the shade should cover the socket and harp of your lamp. Size may vary depending on personal preference.

Shape
There are many shapes to choose from when deciding on a shade. Try to pick one that mimics a shape in your lamp, such as a certain curve or angle.
